Back Pain

Symptoms:

This is one of the most common types of pain experienced by our patients. Back pain can cover a full spectrum of severity from mild, constant pain to acute and severe incapacitating pain.

Frequently it presents as  a dull ache in the lower back, muscle spasms, numbness or pins and needles.

It is likely to impact on your daily life, reducing mobility, creating knots of pain and tension and frequently resulting in headaches.

Causes:

Back pain can develop abruptly or gradually and often for the simplest of reasons. It can be caused by how you sit or stand, if you have lifted or carried something incorrectly, or possibly as a result of a repetitive movement.

Understanding the cause of the pain is key to diagnosing and treating your pain as well as preventing any recurrence.

Solutions:

Gentle and specific manipulation of the joints in the problem areas will correct imbalances. This will relieve your symptoms and pain, increase mobility of the joints and relax your muscles.

Neck Pain

Symptoms:

Nearly everyone has suffered neck pain at some point in their lives. Your neck is crucial to how your body functions, acting as a highway for nerve impulses and yet it can be highly vulnerable to irritation, damage and inflammation.

Your neck, shoulders or upper back are all possible sites for pain to present. Locked or stiff necks, numbness and tingling sensations are indicators that something is amiss.

Pain on turning or shooting pains in your neck are common symptoms, as are persistent dull aches, headaches, tight knots of pain or unexplained weakness. They are all signs that something is wrong and needs attention.

Causes:

There are many reasons you can develop neck pain. Something as simple as how you sleep, watch TV, use a computer or phone, when a repetitive posture or movement can create the right set of circumstances to develop a problem over time.

Sudden onset pain can  result from injuries such as whiplash, whilst degenerative changes might also result in new and increasing levels of pain. Neck pain might also indicate a serious underlying condition, and should always be investigated.

Solutions:

Where the neck pain stems from the abnormal position of your spinal bones, gentle and specific manipulation of the problem areas will move joints back into position. This will relieve your symptoms and pain, increase mobility of the joints and relax your muscles.

Shoulder Pain

Symptoms:

The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body and therefore very vulnerable. Whilst a common problem, shoulder pain is not a complaint you should have to live with.

Damage to your shoulder muscles can restrict the natural movement of the shoulder joint and general loss of mobility. In addition to stiffness, there might also be associated chronic or acute pain. Reduced movement from a Frozen Shoulder with associated long term pain and stiffness might eventually result in the shoulder becoming completely frozen and immobile.

The soreness experienced in your muscles can make your everyday life difficult for you and if you are sporting person, practising any sports virtually impossible.

Causes:

Straining your muscles can result from lifting or moving heavy or awkward objects incorrectly. Falls, injuries and other traumas often create damage around your shoulder joint.

Sports people are especially susceptible to shoulder injuries from working hard in the gym or on the pitch.

Solutions:

Relief can be given by working on the muscles and joints surrounding your shoulder area through manipulation and manual therapies such as massage. Specific exercises to improve your flexibility and strength, coupled with postural advice will also provide assistance and help to avoid a recurrence of the condition.

Headaches and Migraine

Symptoms:

Headaches and migraines are a widespread complaint, with most people experiencing them at times. However, regular head pain can be both debilitating and highly disruptive to your life.

Headaches can vary widely in severity from moderate, dull aches to severe pressure and tension, occurring anywhere from the back of your skull, temples or front and top of your head.

Whilst a throbbing pain provides much discomfort this can often be accompanied by even more unwelcome symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and light sensitivity. Never knowing when it will strike creates constant uncertainty and can lead to the cancellation of precious plans.

Causes:

Headaches and migraines can develop for a huge number of reasons, some are easily identified, such as dehydration, nutritional deficiency or chemical toxins, others due to poor posture, eye strain from too much screen time or emotional tensions and stress.

Often developing as a result of a tightness in the muscles of the neck, back and shoulders the pain is referred to your head. Misalignment of the neck vertebrae, perhaps from a physical trauma, can cause nerve irritation and strained muscles triggering episodes of pain.

Solutions:

Imbalances in your neck (cervical) joints can be realigned, reducing the tension on the muscles and membranes of your upper neck and shoulders. Frequently offering instant pain relief the difference we can make can be life changing.

Arthritis Pain

Symptoms:

With over 10 million sufferers in the UK and at least 100 different types of arthritis, the symptoms of arthritis are a familiar site in our clinics with sufferers looking for the expert care our experienced team provides.

This inflammatory disease affects the joints, making them feel tired, aching and swollen. Affecting wrists, hands, feet, knees and hips this disease can attack almost any joint in your body.

Creating difficulties in your ability to move, acute pain when you do and ongoing chronic pain the rest of the time, we help you to find ways to manage and improve this ongoing condition.

Causes:

There are two main types of arthritis that people suffer from; Osteoarthritis causing joint pain and stiffness and Rheumatoid Arthritis, an autoimmune disease which attacks in cycles causing inflammation, swelling and pain of the joints.

These degenerative conditions are mostly caused by the regular wear and tear on your joints which comes with ageing, although severe overuse, being obese or overweight can create further complications.

Solutions:

Diagnosing the type of arthritis and the joints affected, we aim to improve your joint mobility through adjustment and massage therapy, helping to decrease the level of pain you experience. Coupled with nutritional and exercise advice our aim  is to help you manage and slow the progression of your condition, leading to a fuller, more active life for you.

Sciatica

Symptoms:

Whilst a very common complaint, sciatica can vary in severity ranging from a low grade but constant, deep, nagging ache to sharp stabbing and crippling pains.

The pains frequently present  as back pain which radiates  down your legs often reaching your toes. Sensations that you might experience are cramps, numbness or tingling feelings.

Where sciatica is left untreated and allowed to progress, more nerve damage can occur making it more difficult to treat and running the risk of lingering symptoms.

Causes:

Sciatica is caused by the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The most common cause of this is a bulging or herniated (slipped) disc, where the damaged  disc presses on the nerve.

Less common causes might be spinal degeneration or damage to the nerve for other reasons such as cysts or tumours. Whatever the reason, the condition can be made worse by driving  or even how you are sitting, creating muscular imbalances.

Solutions:

Establishing the cause of your pain through Neuro-orthopedic, neurological and range motion tests ensures we give you a correct diagnosis with X-Rays or MRI scans if required. Using chiropractic techniques, we can reduce pressure on the nerve with an immediate reduction in your pain. Combined with an ongoing plan for stretching, exercise and posture adjustment we aim to prevent any recurrence for you.

Pregnancy Related Pain

Symptoms:

The joy and excitement of pregnancy can be disrupted for many mums-to-be by aches and pains in your lower back, hips and joints.

As the baby develops and your body expands to accommodate it, you may find that your posture changes, putting your pelvis out of balance and unnecessary pressures and restrictions on other parts of your body.

Aches and pains might be constant or perhaps get worse with any activity. They might interfere with your sleep and ability to function well. Whilst the symptoms usually resolve with delivery, chiropractic therapy is a safe and effective way to help your body adapt for a comfortable pregnancy without the need for medication.

Causes:

A number of factors contribute to back pain in pregnancy. Key among them are postural changes,  the pelvis becomes less stable and out of balance. Whilst entirely natural, it still causes mechanical challenges to your musculoskeletal system.

The release of some hormones, mainly oestrogen and progesterone causes ligaments and joints to soften in readiness for your delivery. As pelvic stability decreases, postural problems may increase causing associated back aches and pains.

Solutions:

Experienced in chiropractic therapy for pregnant mums, we work on your spine and pelvis to improve its balance and alignment. As well as reducing the stress on your nervous system, we provide muscle relaxation techniques and advice on the best positions to support your back, thereby achieving a healthy and enjoyable pregnancy.

Sports Injuries

Symptoms:

Whatever your sport, whatever your level from keen amateur to full professional we know you love your sport and want to perform at your optimal level.

Sports injuries often present with a range of discomfort and symptoms from mild to severe pain, you might experience swelling of the injured area, a loss of strength or restriction in your movement. Not only will this hamper your performance and enjoyment but, untreated injuries can lead to more severe, long term consequences.

We understand that the progress you make in your sport is important to you, that is why you train hard. However, if you find that despite your efforts, you don’t seem to be making any further improvements, seem to have reached a plateau of ability, we can help you to enhance your performance by improving the mechanics of your muscles and joints.

Causes:

Intensive training will leave your body vulnerable to injury. Overuse of your muscles leads to tears and inflammation as well as other fatigue related injuries. Some sports have higher risk factors associated with them, for example, high impact based sports can put extra strain on your joints and muscles.

Much sports performance can be limited by physical restrictions of the body, for example a golf swing, which requires shoulder flexibility, torso/hip rotation and core strength. By detecting and correcting any physical limitations, the golfer’s optimal performance can be dramatically improved.

Solutions:

Treating injuries through gentle, targeted adjustments will restore the normal functions of your joints, muscles and nervous system, allowing you to get back to the sports you love. Rehabilitation through exercises to strengthen and improve the flexibility of the affected area prevents any recurrence of the pain and the problem. Our Sports Therapists and TPI Certified Golf Fitness Instructor are here to find ways to help you enhance your sports performance.

Car Accidents

Symptoms:

The symptoms of a Whiplash injury may take some time to develop  after an accident or fall. It is common for people to suffer for quite some time before deciding that their symptoms are too difficult to live with and seek treatment for themselves.

Whiplash injuries tend to develop over stages, frequently starting with neck pain and stiffness accompanied by the reduced mobility of your neck. Musculoskeletal and neurological symptoms often present through dislocations or fractures, shooting pains in the neck, head or arms and pins and needles. These are often accompanied by headaches or migraines.

Symptoms might last for a few weeks or even months, but without seeking appropriate treatment these have the potential to develop into chronic problems lasting years.

Causes:

Whilst most Whiplash injuries are caused by car accidents, they can also be caused by falls or playing sports. Even a relatively small jolt can cause a severe whiplash injury as the neck is forced into sudden and unexpected movement when the head is thrown forward and backwards.

Any sudden movement can cause both soft tissue damage such as  overstretched muscles, discal tears and ruptures and ligament damage, as well as nerve root irritation and displacement of the vertebra.

Solutions:

Specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of Whiplash injures our thorough examination will determine your level of trauma, identifying specific joints or damaged areas and whether you require further imaging (MRI or X-Ray).

Depending on your injuries,  treatment is personalised to your needs and might include adjustments to your spine to restore mobility and muscle release techniques to relieve pain.

Your treatment might also include Dry Needling or Medical Acupuncture to relax any muscle spasm as well as rehabilitation exercises to develop your strength and reduce the likelihood of further problems for you.

Chiropractic for Babies and Children

Symptoms:

You want the best for your new born baby or growing child and nothing is more distressing or concerning than to see them suffering.

Whether it is an obvious pain, for example an ear infection, trouble sleeping, or digestive complaints such as reflux, colic or constipation, these can often inhibit their healthy growth and happiness.

The physical development of your child might seem to have slowed down, perhaps you have noticed that their movements or walking is hindered in some way or their head fixed or lacking in mobility. With the proper paediatric chiropractic techniques, your child’s body can be supported, their nervous system strengthened, allowing the body to heal itself and encouraging proper growth.

Causes:

The birth process places huge stress on your baby’s body and system.

As infants and children grow and develop, learning to crawl, walk and becoming more active they learn through a process of trial and error, frequently falling and trying again. This of course can lead to some injuries which are not always easy to see, whereas a chiropractor will notice even minute changes in their bodies.

Solutions:

Using only the gentlest paediatric techniques for spinal and cranial procedures, your baby is adjusted carefully and precisely to improve health and promote optimal functioning of all their systems. Specialising in the area of chiropractic for children and babies, consulting scientific literature and worldwide clinical experience, we ensure we use the most current evidence for our treatments. We provide both immediate relief from their symptoms as well as long term wellbeing for your child’s growth.
